Pictures of life in the UK for Children in Need project

Barges drifting down a gentle river, children flying kites in grassy meadows and enormous waves lashing our rugged coastline.

These brilliant pictures featuring in a Children In Need Christmas book capture the majesty of life in the UK.

More than 11,000 images were submitted from across the nation before renowned photographer John Rankin chose his favourite 300 for the coffee table book titled This Is Britain.

Rankin said of the project organised by Photobox: ‘We held a mirror up to ourselves, asking who are are? From John o’Groats to Land’s End we wanted to capture and celebrate the extraordinary spectrum of colours and characters that make up our society and binds us together as a country.’

‘Photography’s power lies in its ability to speak to a broad audience. Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in This Is Britain.’

Some of Britain’s leading photographers and photojournalists including David Montgomery, Alex Lake, Paul Postle and Christopher Furlong sent in pictures for the £25 book. All profits will be donated to BBC Children in Need.
