Studies show that between 10-15 per cent of Americans suffer irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) – and one of the most common symptoms is constipation.
Other than laxatives, drinking water and, perhaps, coffee, there’s few options to offer quick relief.
But TikTok famous nutritionist Vanessa Irene has an alternative suggestion – which she says gets to work in 30 minutes.
In a clip shared to her channel, which has had more than 1.3million views, the wellness coach and nutritionist says going to the bathroom once a week is, ‘not healthy for you’.
‘So I’m going to show you guys how to go to the bathroom within 30 minutes – you don’t need to buy any medication,’ she says.
‘I’m gonna give it to you right now.’
She goes on to advise the following:
‘You need to have celery, you need to have spinach and you need to put that in a blender with some water.’ Irene warns against juicing the combination to avoid ‘removing all the fiber’.
‘After you’re done blending you’ll see a little bit of foam and it’ll be a very smooth liquid. Celery and spinach blend nicely.’
Green juices are often thought to be a health elixir, but nutritionist Vanessa Irene says including two specific vegetables is crucial for regular bowel movements
‘But they’ll be a little bit of pulp and you have to consume that. Walk around for a little bit and you’ll go to the bathroom immediately.’
Previous studies have shown that vegetables with a high quantity of water and fiber can make food travel faster through the gut, regulating digestion.
Celery is roughly 95 per cent water; one serving contains half a cup. Similarly, water makes up 93 per cent of spinach.
Experts say anything between three times a day to three times a week is a normal frequency for emptying the bowels.
Ways of preventing constipation include getting enough fiber (in green vegetables, pulses and wholegrains), regular exercise and drinking plenty of fluids, according to the National Institute for Health.
