Father’s passport to be cancelled for unpaid child support

A jet-setting father-of-three has claimed he has been caught up in a government crackdown targeting ‘dead-beat dads’.

Giacomo Collica, a businessman from Fremantle, Western Australia, claims the Department of Human Services threatened to cancel his passport over unpaid child support.

Speaking to A Current Affair, Mr Collica said he was ‘livid’, claiming he is paying off his child support.

‘I’ve got 80 percent of my net salary flowing towards her and the children,’ he told the program.

‘I’m sure there are many cases where dads are avoiding payment, but in this case, I’m paying off the money.’

Mr Collica, who is set to fly to Egypt to secure a business deal, was forced to borrow $11,000 from his parents to pay off the child support debt.

The businessman said he acquired the debt after the Department of Human Services told him to stop paying child support for four months, while they investigated his obligations.

Mr Collica believes the department saw him as a cashed up father who often flew overseas for business deals, and could therefore pay the child support.

‘This is wrong because it’s going to tip someone over the edge,’ he said.
