Residents of a Gold Coast suburb were forced into emergency lockdown after a man allegedly doused a house in petrol and threatened three people inside.

Police were called to a house on Maudsland Rd at Oxenford on the northern end of the coast at around 1.30am on Friday morning after reports a man was making threats and pouring petrol throughout a house on the street.

An emergency was soon declared under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) because of the smell of fumes and the possibility of a fire, locking down neighbouring houses.

A 31-year-old Maudsland was arrested soon after and the PSPA was lifted at about 1.50am.

He has been charged with wilful damage and threatening violence, and will appear at Southport Magistrates Court on Friday.

Three people, who were inside the property at the time, were not physically injured.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
