- Hugo Keenan did not train over the weekend after suffering knee injury
- Fears the 27-year-old Leinster back may be out for a number of weeks
- James Lowe or Jordan Larmour could replace Keenan against Wales
Star Ireland full-back Hugo Keenan is a big injury doubt for his team’s round three Six Nations clash with Wales in Dublin on Saturday due to a knee problem.
Keenan is a central figure for Andy Farrell’s side who are hunting a second consecutive grand slam after opening wins over France and Italy and a clean sweep in 2023.
The 27-year-old suffered his injury in the hammering of the Azzurri and was substituted in the 55th minute. Keenan didn’t train over the weekend.
Ireland have yet to comment officially on his fitness.
But there are fears the Leinster back may be out for a number of weeks which means he could also miss the trip to Twickenham to face England in round four on March 9.
Ireland full-back Hugo Keenan has not trained since suffering the knee injury against Italy
While Ireland are far from a one-man team, Keenan’s importance to them is shown by the fact he has started 32 of the country’s last 36 Tests.
Were there to be a British & Irish Lions tour tomorrow, Keenan or England’s Freddie Steward would likely be considered as the starting No 15.
With Keenan a worry to face Wales – who have lost their two 2024 Championship games to Scotland and England to date – Ireland head coach Farrell may have to replace a key man.
James Lowe or Jordan Larmour are possible candidates.
