Shocking video shows moment LAPD cops shoot dead bipolar man who was armed with a PLASTIC FORK

Shocking video has been released showing the moment Los Angeles cops shot dead a bipolar man carrying a plastic fork.

Jason Maccani, 36, was gunned down in a Skid Row warehouse on Saturday. Police were called to the scene to a report of a man threatening people with a ‘stick or pole.’

Authorities claimed the deceased ‘charged’ at them, but video shows how Maccani initially complied with orders to surrender, before dropping his hands and advancing towards them.

This prompted cops to begin firing beanbags and rubber projectiles before rookie officer Caleb Garcia-Alamilla discharged a lethal round into the victim’s chest.

‘You’re telling me you thought that was a knife or a weapon that could seriously injure you?’ Mike Maccani, Jason’s brother fumed to the LA Times. ‘I’d be more scared of a closed fist than a white plastic fork.’

Maccani was only ‘armed’ with a plastic fork at the time, which was later submitted as evidence

Police later said the officer identified in the shooting is Garcia-Alamilla, a former marine who graduated less than a year ago. The shooting is now under investigation and police released the footage from the shooting Tuesday.  

Surveillance footage shows seven officers advancing down the corridor at the 600 block of Towne Avenue.

Maccani appears from around a corner, walking slowly towards the officers with the fork clenched between his fingers.

As he approaches officers, who said they thought he was carrying a screwdriver or a knife, they begin to fire rounds from a beanbag shotgun.

Maccani then continues to lurch towards them, making contact with a beanbag shotgun being held by a female officer.

As he grabs for the gun, another officer unleashes the lethal round from his gun and the cops wrestle Maccani to the ground.

Bodycam footage also shows how Maccani initially complied with officers by raising his hands in the air and walking backward towards their voice.

After a few steps he drops his hands, prompting the cops to begin shouting at him to stay still.

The confused-looking victim continues advancing and a beanbag round glances off him.

Maccani was due to meet up with his brother and sister for a ‘sibling day’ before he was fatally shot in the altercation with police

The victim had suffered a manic episode just days before his death, according to his brother

Maccani initially raised his arms as instructed and began walking slowly towards officers

A loud gunshot-type noise can be heard and the Maccani lets out a scream before lunging toward the female officer. There is another bang and another officer manages to push him up against a wall.

The cops then pile on top of him, wrestle him to the ground and slap him in handcuffs. 

‘Relax, guys did anyone shoot?’ One officer asks as Maccani can be heard groaning on the floor.

‘I did,’ another responds, before confirming he ‘shot lethal’ in the arm.

Authorities are now probing, ‘whether the use of deadly force complied with LAPD’s policies and procedures’, according to a police statement.

Maccani’s brother said he had suffered a manic episode just days before his death. He is calling for better police training to deal with mental health issues.

‘He was never violent,’ he said. ‘That’s something that kind of disturbed me about this recent incident.’

Mike became concerned about his brother when he stopped responding to texts about their plans to hang out with their sister for a ‘sibling day’ on Saturday.

On Monday, his worst fears were confirmed when he received a call from the L.A. County medical examiner’s office. 

‘I just collapsed when I got home in my partner’s arms and just cried and cried,’ he said.

Jason was described as a keen snowboarder, who cared deeply for his maternal grandparents who he would visit with multiple times a week.
