I spent 10 hours travelling to and from Tenerife, but was only there for less than a day: Shop worker who takes cheap flights to European destinations has just one rule – she must get there and back in 24 hours

A shop worker sat on planes for nearly 10 hours on her latest adventure when she flew to and from Tenerife in the same day on a 5,000 mile round trip by herself.

It’s part of Danielle Mclean’s plan is to explore Europe one day at a time by using cheap flights from Edinburgh airport to film herself on day trips to different countries.

The 35-year-old filmed her entire trip from her Wetherspoons breakfast at the airport, to her early morning flight and her few hours exploring before returning home.

Her lightning visit to the sunshine Spanish island on January 30 was her 20th fun day out involving budget return flights in the last five years.

Danielle’s previous overseas jaunts have included day visits to Paris, Dublin, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Malmö, Rome, Geneva, Hamburg, Prague, Krakow, Gdańsk, Palma, Barcelona, Milan and Annemasse in France.

She has also squeezed in flights to other parts of the UK to visit London, Brighton, Belfast and Barra in the Outer Hebrides.

Danielle, who films herself on a Canon G7 camera, posts all her footage of her adventures on her YouTube channel which attracts thousands of views.

Most of the time she travels by herself, but her mother has accompanied her on her trips to Milan and Krakow.

Danielle said: ‘I love travelling and I want to see as many places as possible. It is just nice to do something exciting when I have day off instead of staying at home.

‘I don’t have a lot of time to spare when I go away – but I can still walk around and it is surprising how much you can see.

‘Flights are usually cheap if you book them in advance, and I don’t have to pay for hotels when I am coming back the same day.’

Danielle’s trip to Tenerife was her furthest ever day out and she decided to do it, despite having visited the island four times last year on week-long all-inclusive holidays

Her 43 minute long video of her Tenerife adventure shows her arriving in the car park of Edinburgh airport at 4am after the short drive from her home.

She is then seen braving the chilly Scottish weather in her denim shorts and T shirt as she parks up and heads into the terminal, leaving her jacket in her car.

After going through security and making light of the cold, she shows herself tucking into a meaty breakfast of a sausage in a roll from the airport’s Wetherspoons, washed down with an orange juice.

Proving faithful to her Scottish roots, Danielle then buys two bottles of IRN-BRU to take in her backpack and sustain herself during the day ahead.

Her video shows her tucking into a bag of Peperami pizza buns and a packet of Skittles Squishy Cloudz sweets as an early morning snack while watching the sun rise.

After landing in Tenerife and getting through passport control, she walks out of the airport skirting around the runway fence on the half hour stroll to the fishing village of Los Abrigos.

She then films herself on the beach, stopping to dip her feet in the water, before heading to the Bahia Principe Fantasia hotel where she stayed four times last year on all-inclusive package holidays in March, April, September and December.

Danielle said she wanted to say a surprise ‘hola’ to staff at the hotel, particularly a receptionist called Lissa and restaurant manager Cedric.

She had bought along gifts of a box of traditional Scottish Tablet, a traditional sweet snack made of condensed milk, butter and sugar, for Cedric, and some make-up for Lissa.

But her video shows her finding that Lissa was on holiday and Cedric was not working until later of the day, so she had to leave her gifts for them at reception.

Danielle spent the rest of her time going for a walk to the nearby marina before popping into a HiperDino supermarket to buy four bags of tomato ketchup flavoured Pom-bear crisps and some more sweets to take home.

She said: ‘I like to get Pom-bear snacks back in Edinburgh, but you can only buy plain or cheese and onion flavours in the UK.

‘I love the tomato flavour that you can get in Spain, so the trip was worth it just to get a couple of bags of them. They are absolutely delicious.’

Danielle said she then ran out of time and had to walk back to the airport in time to eat a Burger King meal of chicken fries, chips and ice cream in the terminal, along with a can of drink from a vending machine, before her £55 easyJet flight home at 6.30am.

Her flight arrived back on time in Edinburgh, allowing her to be in bed before midnight and able to enjoy a night’s sleep before heading to work the next day.

Danielle who is single said the highlight of her trip had been the feeling of walking around in the sunny 22C temperatures.

She added: ‘It is just so nice to be in a different country, especially when there is nice hot weather and it is cold back home.

‘I love Tenerife and going there was one of my favourite one day trips, despite having two flights of 4 hours and 45 minutes each to get there and back.

‘It was a shame that I did not get to see Cedric and Lissa. I hope they got their presents. I am going back to Tenerife on a proper holiday soon so I will hopefully see them then.’

Danielle said she was a special fan of the Bahia Principe Fantasia hotel which includes a Disney-style castle.

She added: ‘I love the choice of food they have. There is snack bar like McDonald’s, a buffet restaurant as well as an Italian, Japanese and a la carte steak restaurants.

‘The staff are friendly and Lissa and Cedric, are really good at speaking English.

‘I always film my holidays when staying there and put them on YouTube. Now when I am at the hotel lots of people stop me and ask if I am the person in my videos because they have watched them.’

She said her cheapest trip had been to Hamburg when the return Ryanair flight cost just £12.99, followed by her flights to Gdańsk which cost her £26.

Her most expensive trip has been her day out in Krakow, Poland, were her flights cost £84.

Danielle said she had been to Copenhagen twice, looking around the city on her first trip and then taking a train to visit nearby Malmö in Sweden on her second visit.

She has also flown to Geneva twice, giving her a day to walk around the Swiss city on her first trip and a chance to cross over the French border to Annemasse on her second.

Danielle also flew to Gatwick airport twice, so she could catch trains into central London and later into Brighton.

She is now running out of destinations which she can reach from Edinburgh airport, but she said: ‘There are often new flights to places, so I am sure I will be off somewhere else soon.’
