Man, 24, dies after being swept out to sea while wading in the shallows at Pippi Beach in Yamba

A 24-year-old man has died after being swept out to sea while wading in the shallows.

The man was in shallow water with a friend at Pippi Beach in Yamba, on the New South Wales north coast, when he was dragged out by the surf.

He signalled for help before vanishing below the surface at about 2.30pm.

Pippi Beach is not patrolled.

Police, paramedics, surf lifesavers and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter searched for the man and he was eventually found by helicopter crew at 6pm.

He was brought to shore but could not be saved.

The man is believed to have been on holiday from Sydney.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
