Marco Pierre White looks worlds away from his Hell’s Kitchen days as chef proves he loves a bargain on shopping trip to Aldi

He is famed for being the youngest and first British chef to achieve three Michelin stars.

And while his restaurants may be fine dining, that didn’t stop Marco Pierre White, 62, from knowing a bargain when he sees one as he headed to Aldi in Wiltshire on Monday.

Marco stocked up on bread and crates of beer for the outing. It comes as his flagship restaurant in London’s Leicester Square closed after nearly two years of trading.

Black & White Hospitality launched in late 2021 with the 14,500 sq ft venue traded as a ‘steak, pizza and gin house’.

The chef was awarded three Michelin stars in 1995 at the age of 33 after opening Harveys in Wandsworth in 1987 and later trained Gordon Ramsay.

In 1999, Marco retired his career as a chef and returned his Michelin stars.

He said last year it was ‘wonderful’ being so successful at such a young age, but soon found his working life ‘boring’ because his cooking became routine.

‘You’re being judged by people who have less knowledge than you, and you place your value on them, but it’s a wonderful journey,’ he said.

‘As a young man, winning three [Michelin] stars is very exciting, but then when you’ve won it, it’s quite boring [when] people want to have those specialties, it’s conveyor belt cuisine,’ he said.

Marco used to be a regular guest judge on Australia’s MasterChef, but left the show for Hell’s Kitchen after co-host Matt Preston criticised his son Marco Pierre White

In 2017, Marco vowed ‘on his mother’s grave’ to get back at his co-star after the  comments Matt made on Sydney radio about Marco Jr.’s wild lifestyle of drug binges and sex with prostitutes.

‘That’s that whole rich, London trust fund babe, trustifarian-type stuff – it’s another world,’ Matt said at the time.

Marco Sr. was so incensed by what the English food critic had said that he refused to even discuss it during a television interview the following year.
