The boy was transferred to Princess Margaret Hospital, initially in a critical condition with swelling to his brain and a fractured skull, Fairfax Media reported.
He was in a stable condition awaiting surgery on Tuesday night.
Nine News reporter Alice Pooley told 6PR the boy’s family were requesting privacy.
‘They have said they hope other children, particularly at this school, learn from this and don’t undertake such careless behaviour,’ she said.
