Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne weather: Rain to strike this weekend

Australians will shiver through yet another freezing weekend as crisp temperatures, icy winds and showers continue to plague large parts of the country.

Cold weather is forecast to continue this weekend as a lengthy cold snap settles in Australia’s eastern parts and causes temperatures to plummet.

Widespread frost is expected for the country’s eastern third and is set to extend into South Australia and the southern parts of the Northern Territory.

It comes after Sydney and Melbourne shivered through a respective 7C and 1.6C on Wednesday, with the ‘feels like’ temperatures sitting even lower.

Australians celebrated the winter solstice on Friday, with less than 10 hours of sunlight expected today amid freezing temperatures this week.

Daily Mail Australia reveals what you can expect in your city this weekend.

Sydney

A strong surge of southerly winds along the New South Wales coastline will cause temperatures to plummet in Sydney and surrounding areas this weekend.

Weatherzone meteorologist Yoska Hermanzes told Daily Mail Australia the burst of strong gusts could get up to 60-65km/hour on Saturday afternoon.

‘These winds will make the city feel pretty cool,’ Ms Hermanzes said.

Sydney is forecast to receive gusty winds and showers this weekend with the maximum temperature struggling to get above 14C.

The forecaster said Jervis Bay, Sydney, the Central Coast and the Hunter Coast would be the most impacted by showers with temperatures to drop to 10C.

‘In Sydney, showers are extending into the afternoon of Sunday,’ Ms Hermanzes said.

‘The maximum temperature on Saturday will reach just 17 to 18C which is quite chilly for Brisbane,’ she said.

Melbourne

Further south in Melbourne, weather will remain cold but generally dry this weekend.
