Teacher dies in Bronx school bathroom after drug overdose

  • The 36-year-old teacher was found in the bathroom of Public School X811 
  • He was found in a locked cubicle by another teacher at 5.55pm on Thursday 
  • The school’s 639 special needs students had long gone home at 2.50pm 
  • Police sources say he was found next to a glassine envelope, the kind which is commonly used for to transport heroin
  • The teacher’s identity has not yet been released  

A teacher has been found dead in a locked cubicle at a New York special education school after an apparent drug overdose. 

The 36-year-old man was found by another member of staff at Public School X811 in The Bronx on Thursday at 6.10pm.

He has not been named but police sources tell New York Daily News they believe the man died of a drug overdose. 

The teacher is believed to have gone into the cubicle shortly after the end of the school day at 2.50pm which is when he was last seen alive. 

The teacher was found dead in the bathrooms of Public School X811 on Thursday at 5.55pm. All students had gone home and he was discovered next to a glassine envelope 

All of the students had left school for the day when he was found. 

A glassine envelope, the type commonly used for transporting heroin, was found next to him.  

New York Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña told DailyMail.com in a statement: ‘This is deeply saddening and my heart goes out to the teacher’s family and the school community. 

‘We will be providing grief counselors and ongoing resources to support students and staff during this difficult time.’ 

The department did not comment on the teacher’s professional background.

There are 639 students at the school. 

An NYPD spokesman confirmed the teacher’s death on Friday. He was pronounced dead at the scene by EMTs who were called. 

The medical examiner has not yet confirmed the man’s cause of death. 

Authorities are waiting to notify his family of his death before releasing his identity.
