A ute has been torn in half in a crash in western Sydney that initially perplexed police because no-one was at the scene.
The ute crashed on Kurmond Road near Meadows Road in Kurmond, a small village 70km west of the city, at about 1am on Thursday.
Police said when they arrived, the driver had already left the scene.
About two hours later, the 28-year-old male P-plater was found in bushland about 1.5km from the crash site.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated him for a broken collarbone and lacerations.
The man was transported to Westmead Hospital in a serious condition where he will undergo mandatory testing.
