A toddler has died in hospital after being struck by a car in Adelaide.
The 18-month-old girl was left with life-threatening injuries after she was hit by the car on Rentoul Avenue, in Netherby, at about 8am on Friday.
Paramedics rushed to the scene in the city’s inner-south and transported the toddler to hospital with life-threatening injuries according to South Australia Police.
‘The child, an 18-month old girl, was treated by Paramedics at the scene but sadly died in hospital,’ police said.
The driver of the vehicle has been assisting police with their investigation and has been taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
Major Crash Investigators attended the scene to determine the cause of the crash.
Rentoul Road was closed between Pulleine Avenue and Netherby Avenue for a number of hours but has since reopened.
The front of the ute reportedly hit the child, who was near the end of the driveway by the roadside, according to 7News.
The girl’s death is the 59th life lost on South Australian roads this year.
Distressed local Michael Angelakis, 73, told The Advertiser he was heartbroken for the parents of the 18-month-old.
‘It’s the worst thing for any parent – and to happen in your backyard – you live with it for the rest of your life. The images,’ he said.
‘How can you ever move away from it? It’s just there for life.’
He said the typically-quiet neighbourhood was shaken by the tragedy and feels for ‘very private’ family who lost a child.
Mr Angelakis said he first saw ‘three or four’ police cars and a similar number of ambulances arrive as the community went into ‘meltdown’.
