‘Cringe’ Wiggles video sparks AFL storm after Lions’ stunning comeback to knock GWS out

GWS Giants fans not only had to watch their side let a 44-point lead slip on Saturday night at Engie Stadium against the Brisbane Lions – they also got to witness the Wiggles rub salt into the wound.

The Lions stormed home to a 15.15 (105) to 15.10 (100) victory over GWS in their semi-final despite trailing by 44 points in the third quarter.

The Wiggles were excited about the result, with Blue Wiggle Anthony Field and Purple Wiggle Lachie Gillespie producing a cheeky video to celebrate.

In the clip, Field takes a swipe at GWS by knocking back an orange for their fruit salad.

‘The Lions won. Let’s make a Brisbane Lions Fruit Salad,’ says Gillespie.

‘We are the pride of Brisbane town, we wear maroon, blue and gold.

‘The first step, a maroon apple. The second step, blue blueberries. The third step, a gold kiwi.

‘All for one and one for all.’

Not all footy fans were happy with the cheeky tune from the Wiggles

In the following scene, Field says: ‘Hey Lachy, would you like a Giants orange for the fruit salad?

‘Yes? No.’

The cheeky song finishes with Gillespie singing: ‘All for one and one for all. Go the Lions.’

The clip got mixed reviews from fans, with more than a few taking issue with it.

‘This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen,’ posted one X user.

‘Cringe,’ replied another.

‘You’ve got time to delete this,’ said a third.

‘Oh my f’ing goodness … the social media team needs to put down the crack pipe & go to bed, this is embarrassing,’ replied another.

Brisbane will now meet Geelong in a rematch of the 2022 preliminary final, which the Cats won by 71 points.

The Lions reached last year’s grand final, only to suffer a four-point defeat to Collingwood.

Coach Chris Fagan, asked if his players drew on last year’s grand-final heartache during the stirring fightback, was frank.

‘Probably,’ Fagan said.

‘I know they’re desperate to get back there and have another crack.

‘There is still a long way to go before we can do that. We play Geelong next week, a pretty damn good football club and side, who gave us a lesson in a preliminary final a couple of years ago.

‘But I’ve got no doubt that drives them.

‘I look at Dayne Zorko and it drives him, you know he’s 35. He doesn’t know how many years he’s got left to play the game and he desperately wants to win one.

‘I think that drove the group. Joey Daniher is the same. The guys in our team that are a little older, they lifted in that last quarter.’
