Cops launch rescue operation after body is found down Ellalong mineshaft

A man’s body has been discovered in an unused mine shaft following reports of a workplace incident. 

Authorities were called to the mine shaft off Dry Creek Road in Ellalong near Cessnock in the NSW Hunter Valley at about 12.45pm on Tuesday. 

Police were told by those at the scene that a man had fallen into the decommissioned mine shaft.

Hunter Valley Police, NSW Fire and Rescue and paramedics remain on the scene.

Several emergency vehicles, a mines rescue truck and more than a dozen responders arrived on Dry Creek Road.

‘The operation is expected to be ongoing for some time,’ a police statement read.
