Former NFL star Cam Newton criticizes Tyreek Hill for his behavior during detainment by Miami police

Former NFL quarterback Cam Newton has criticized Tyreek Hill’s conduct during his recent detainment by police before a Miami Dolphins game.

Hill was pulled from his car near the team’s Hard Rock Stadium less than three hours before kickoff of Miami’s Week 1 game.

The Super Bowl winner was placed on the ground and handcuffed, and teammate Calais Campbell – who drove by the scene and stopped in an effort to play peacemaker – also was handcuffed by police during the incident.

Body camera footage of the incident, released by the Miami-Dade Police Department last week, showed that the traffic stop escalated quickly after Hill put up the window of his car.

Hill has since acknowledged that he could have handled himself better in the initial moments of the incident but also said he wants one of the officers involved in the incident dismissed from the police force.

Newton, who played 11 seasons in the NFL and was named MVP in 2015, has hit out at Hill’s behavior during the incident.

Speaking on an episode of his ‘4th & 1 Podcast’, Newton scolded Hill for his decision to roll up his window in front of the police officers.

He said: ‘Bro, right there – comply! I’m just trying to keep you alive.

‘I’m not talking to Tyreek Hill more than I’m talking to everybody else that’s going to get pulled over on a day-to-day basis.

‘When you roll the window down, and you roll the window back up, bro don’t do that. You can’t do that.

‘It puts you in danger, and you have to put yourself in the officer’s position. He don’t know what the hell is in that damn car.’

Hill received two citations, including careless driving en route to Hard Rock Stadium and a seatbelt violation.

Police bodycam footage of the incident was released, in which cops told Hill to ‘stop crying’ and ‘do what we tell you.’

Another clip showed an officer knocking on Hill’s driver’s side window, telling him to roll it down, before pulling the receiver out of his black McLaren 720s coupe.

Hill accused one of the responding officers, Danny Torres, of using excessive force during the detainment.

Torres, who has been suspended six times in his 27-year career, was placed on administrative leave as the Miami Dade PD opened an internal investigation on the case.

His previous suspensions varied between five to 20 days.

In an interview with Taylor Rooks after the incident, Hill revealed how an officer was trying to get a reaction from him during the detainment.

‘There was a lot of that going on,’ Hill said. ‘Whenever I was handcuffed behind my back, the officer was pinching me on my neck. Like, trying to get me to do something to him.’

Hill later admitted that he’d only seen the footage once. Meanwhile, his wife and mother have seen the clip ‘over 100 times’ and get angrier with each viewing.

‘Let’s not get mad, let’s learn,’ Hill said to his family. ‘Cause the more we get mad, I feel like that’s moving us backwards. It’s all about accountability on both sides.’
