Hundreds of people evacuated after stolen car crashes into unit block in Merrylands, Sydney

An allegedly stolen car crashed into an apartment block before bursting into flames, forcing more than 250 residents to be evacuated in the middle of the night. 

The Toyota RAV4 ploughed into the ground floor of the building in Merrylands, in Sydney’s west, at about 2.45am on Thursday.

The vehicle then caught alight with emergency services rushing to the scene.

Firefighters battled the blaze and were able to extinguish the fire without the building suffering any damage.

Residents living in the unit complex have since been able to go back inside their homes and it’s understood nobody was injured in the crash.

NSW Police are investigating the incident.
