NFL Hall of Fame coach questions Kamala Harris’ view on abortion rights with controversial tweet

Legendary former NFL coach Tony Dungy has called out Kamala Harris for defending women’s abortion rights in a controversial post on social media.

As she ramps up her campaign to be the next US President, Harris – who was publicly endorsed by Taylor Swift earlier this month – doubled down on her support for abortion rights this week while condemning rival Donald Trump for introducing bans during his previous term in the White House.

‘One does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree: The government, and certainly Donald Trump, should not be telling a woman what to do with her body,’ the Democratic nominee wrote on X.

Yet Harris’ post on the matter did not go down well with Dungy, who blasted her for suggesting those in favor of abortion are not going against their ‘faith’.

The Hall of Fame NFL coach quoted her statement and said: ‘Dear VP Harris: I hear you make this statement all the time. Exactly what ‘faith’ are you talking about when you say you don’t have to abandon it to support abortion?

‘Are you talking about the Christian faith that says all babies are made in the image of God (Gen 1:26), that God places them in the womb (Jer 1:5) and that we should not take any life unjustly (Luke 18:20)?

‘Are you talking about that faith or some nebulous, general ‘faith’ that says we’re good enough, and smart enough to make our own decisions? What ‘faith’ are you talking about?’

Dungy, the first black coach to be inducted into the NFL’s Hall of Fame in the modern era and a man of faith, sparked controversy by calling out Harris on her abortion stance, with several questioning his argument about religion.

One replied to the football icon and said: ‘with all due respect, you or anyone else for that matter, should not have the right to make a health decision for my wife or daughter, nor should I have any say in yours. Have a blessed day.’

Another put: ‘Unclear why certain people feel they can impose their faith on another person’s medical decisions.’

While one commented: ‘Stop right there Tony. You’ll never be able to get pregnant, carry a baby, possibly miscarry, or any of the other millions of things women have to deal with. The government shouldn’t be making laws about women’s rights for their health.’

Others, however, sided with Dungy after his suggestion that a pro-abortion stance conflicts with Christianity.

One said: ‘Thank you Tony Dungy!!!! We need more people to stand up!!’

Another wrote: ‘Coach Dungy knows what’s up!! Best coach in Buccaneers history & a great Christian man!’

While one simply put: ‘Tell em coach.. they not gone like this. But it’s truth!!’
