Dua Lipa hits back at trolls who roasted her dance moves after winning Best Choreography at VMAs

Dua Lipa has addressed the backlash she faced over her dance moves after winning the coveted Best Choreography award for her music video Houdini at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Appearing on The Project on Tuesday night, host Sarah Harris didn’t hold back as she brought up the singer’s triumphant VMA win, referencing the social media trolls who previously took aim at Dua’s dance skills.

‘You’ve got a brand new album, performed on SNL, and your film clip Houdini won Best Choreography at the VMAs.

‘That really must have felt like a big F-you to all those internet haters who trolled you for your dance moves once upon a time,’ Harris remarked.

The 29-year-old responded with grace and maturity, admitting that while the online criticism once stung, she’s moved beyond it.

‘You know what, I try not to even think about that anymore because I feel like so much time has passed since then, and so much work has been done,’ Dua said with a smile.

‘But it’s really a beautiful award to get, and to feel so, I guess, accomplished in a way, and confident.’

Back in 2017 a clip of her dancing on stage during a concert went viral with fans likening her a pencil in a ‘pencil sharpener’.

The British-Albanian singer also reflected on the journey she’s been on since facing the initial backlash, which took place early in her career.

‘It took a little while to get there, so I’m very, very happy,’ she admitted.

‘For me, being able to do a whole music video, just me on my own, and having the confidence to do that, feels amazing.’

The Houdini music video, which features Dua in a series of sleek, solo dance routines, has been widely praised for its slick choreography and mesmerising visuals – a clear response to those who once doubted her dancing abilities.

The pop sensation has been on a winning streak, not only clinching the VMAs award but also thrilling fans with performances on Saturday Night Live and releasing her highly anticipated third studio album.

The Grammy winner previously revealed that while it never got to a point where she ‘couldn’t get out of bed’, it certainly when her emotions felt the ‘most heightened’ while reading hateful comments online.

But as Dua built up her name, reputation and skills, the British-Albanian star said she felt ‘a real kick’ after her 2019 single Don’t Start Now came out.

The Barbie actress didn’t shy away from admitting a lot of people started changing their opinion on her performance skills after that, making her feel she finally proved them wrong.
