Salim Mehajer faces bankruptcy over unpaid $600k staircase

Controversial socialite Salim Mehajer could be bankrupt for Christmas, unless he can find $1 million within the next fortnight to pay for a marble staircase.

The 31-year-old is currently facing charges of breaching an AVO taken out by ex-wife Aysha, committing electoral fraud and civil cases about his property developments.

And Mehajer will soon be able to add bankruptcy to his list of woes, unless he is able to pay the roughly seven-figure sum he owes to builders Prime Marble & Granite, The Daily Telegraph reports.

A 2014 invoice from the company for $596,178 for the lavish floating marble staircase at his mansion on Frances St, Lidcombe, in Sydney’s west, went unpaid by Mehajer.

The builders successfully took the former deputy mayor of Auburn council to court in October, where he was ordered to pay for the staircase and also their legal costs.

But in the wake of the NSW District Court judgement he again failed to pay up, with Prime Marble & Granite serving a bankruptcy notice on Mehajer in early November.

He now only has until December 12 to pay the full amount or risk being regarded as bankrupt by the time the festive season arrives.

It is understood Mehajer is planning to contest the notice and he is listed to front the Federal Court on December 15.

If bankrupted, Mehajer will face enormous difficulties in operating his large portfolio of property developments across Sydney.

His parents have also previously declared themselves bankrupt after racking up $10 million in unpaid debts in December 2010.
