Sarah Harris slams plan to track children’s weight in schools to combat obesity – after The Project host was called ‘too fat’ as a kid: ‘I would hate my sons to be weighed!’

Sarah Harris has slammed a controversial plan to track children’s height and weight.

Earlier this month, The Australian College of Nursing advised that school nurses should be tracking the weight and height of students in order combat increasing rates of childhood obesity. 

The Project co-host, 43, weighed in on the controversy, reflecting on her own struggles with weight when she was a kid.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Sarah said she was told she was ‘too fat’ for the front row of her dance class.

The mother-of-two said she would hate for her two sons, Paul, eight, and Harry, six, to be weighed.

‘I would hate for my kids to be weighed. I know what I was like growing up and just how the wrong comments can land,’ she said.

‘I am not a health expert but I got a really visceral emotional reaction when I read the story about it because I know what it was like to be eight-years-old and to be told that I was carrying too much weight,’ she added.

Sarah revealed that the way people talked about her weight when she was young had long-lasting effects, causing her ‘complicated relationship with food.’ 

‘Restricting calories and exercising too much, it was just insane. I’m 43 now so I eat for function. I couldn’t do the job that I do, the travel I do, and run after two boys, trying to starve myself. 

‘You can’t run a car on an empty tank … it has taken me a long time to pick apart that kind of conditioning I did on myself after getting those comments when I was a kid,’ the TV star shared.

Harris announced her split from IT specialist husband Tom Ward in March 2021, after seven years of marriage.

The former couple share custody of sons Paul, seven, and Harry, five.

It comes as The Project viewers noticed a major sign that Sarah will be returning to the show in 2025.

The current affairs program recently shared a promotional image for the show to promote the coming year.

The image featured Sarah standing alongside Waleed Aly, and was captioned: ‘We hear you like your news… delivered differently. So, see you in 2025 for more of the same!’

A number of regular watchers have posted to the Media Spy forums, saying this has confirmed Sarah has re-signed with the news program.

‘It seems Sarah will re-sign on for another year. Hard to believe she’s been there nearly two years now,’ one person wrote.

‘It seems to be a new picture of Sarah & Waleed,’ another agreed.

However one person claimed the image doesn’t confirm Sarah will be remaining on the show for the entire year.

‘Back in 2022, they had Lisa Wilkinson and Peter Hellier announced for 2023, then they left, along with Carrie who had already announced that she was leaving,’ they wrote.
