Magnitude 6.5 earthquake strikes close Australian neighbour

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake has struck off the coast of Tonga.

The earthquake was recorded at 8.05pm UTC on Tuesday near the Vavaʻu island group.

Geoscience Australia reported that the quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10km.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, there is no tsunami threat to Australia.
