A man is in hospital after he was shot four times in a suburban street – with his assailant still on the run.
Police were called to Dale Place, Winston Hills in Sydney’s west at about 10.50pm on Wednesday following reports of a shooting.
Officers found a man had been shot four times in various parts of his body.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the 28-year-old man at the scene and he was transported to hospital in a serious but stable condition, where he remains under police guard.
A crime scene was established, with specialist forensic police brought in.
Police are working to determine if the shooting is linked to an organised crime dispute among Sydney underworld figures.
Specialist forensic police were on Thursday morning still examining the crime scene where numerous bullet holes were visible at the front of a suburban home in a quiet cul-de-sac.
The circumstances pointed to a targeted shooting but it was too early to tell if it was gang-related, police told AAP.

Shortly after, a Jeep Grand Cherokee was found ablaze in Northmead
A second crime scene was established at Redbank Road in Northmead where a car was found burning at about 11pm.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee SUV was destroyed in the blaze.
The investigation remains ongoing, with police urging anyone with information to come forward.
Sydney was hit with dozens of tit-for-tat gangland shootings beginning in 2020 spurred by a war between rival crime organisations.
The public attacks included five targeted shootings during a week in mid-July.
But there has been a lull in the carnage for much of 2024 after a series of arrests, which investigators say have helped dismantle one of the major gangs behind the violence.
More to come
