Olivia Newton-John’s daughter Chloe Lattanzi refused permission to record her mother’s famous single

Chloe Lattanzi, the daughter of late Australian pop icon Olivia Newton-John, has revealed she was refused permission to record her mum’s most famous single.

Appearing on The Project on Wednesday to promote Olivia’s Walk For Wellness, Chloe talked about her own newly released debut single Phoenix on 26 September, which is also Olivia’s birthday.

After discussing the upcoming Walk For Wellness’ 1980s theme, panelist Sarah Harris asked Chloe if she had any designs on releasing a version of her mother’s best known single, Physical.

‘That’s a story,’ Chloe said.

‘I did, and one writer gave absolute permission, the other one did not.’

Host Waleed Ali chimed in, demanding to know more about the writer who nixed Chloe’s cover.

‘So who is the other one and what’s their address,’ Waleed said, before guest panellist Myf Warhurst suggested a letter writing campaign to reverse the decision.

Arguably Olivia’s best known single, Physical hit number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 in November 1981 and remained at the top spot for 10 weeks – the most for any single in the 1980s.

The track eventually hit number one in seven countries including Australia, Canada, and New Zealand and was certified platinum in the US and Australia.

The song’s juggernaut success was in spite of the fact that it was censored and even banned by some radio stations for its sexually suggestive content.

Elsewhere in the interview, Chloe revealed that Olivia is still very much a part of her life two years after her death.

Whenever I call out for her, if I need guidance or help, she delivers it through a person or a dream,’ she said.

‘We talk to each other.’

She then drew attention to a green stone around her neck, revealing the gem resembled her late other’s spirit.

‘I was back stage talking to a lovely person who works here and going through all of her pictures with her spirit, which resembles this exact stone,’ she said, holding it up for the camera.

‘That world is very real,’ Chloe added. ‘She’s here right now.’

Chloe was Olivia’s only child with ex-husband Matt Lattanzi.

Olivia died peacefully in her home in Southern California on August 8 2022, surrounded by family and friends.

Her death came after a brave and extraordinarily public decades-long battle with cancer. She was diagnosed three times in 1992, 2013 and, for a final time, in 2017.

An outpouring of public grief followed her death and then Victorian Premier Dan Andrews offered a state funeral to her family, which they accepted.

Her husband John Easterling revealed the Grease star’s final wish before her death.

He said Olivia and her family requested donations be made to her charity, the Olivia Newton-John Foundation Fund, in her memory instead of flowers.
