Linda was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1950.
Her career began when she won beauty contests. She was Miss Shelby County in 1969 and Miss Mid-South Fair in Memphis in 1970; that same year she was Miss Memphis State University.
Also in 1970 she was the third runner-up in the 1970 Miss Tennessee pageant.
Thompson was named Miss Tennessee in 1972.

In 1977, Thompson became a regular on the television series Hee Haw.
