The Project star Sarah Harris stunned as she hears John Farnham’s voice for first time after mouth cancer surgery

Sarah Harris appeared to get choked up on Tuesday night after hearing John Farnham’s voice for the first time since his marathon mouth cancer surgery.

The Project panellist, 43, was left stunned as she heard a snippet of the British-born Australian singer, 75, narrate the audiobook version of his memoir The Voice Inside.

Playing the audio on the news program, Sarah could be heard gasping in shock as she listened to Farnham’s voice which sounded more gravelly than usual.

‘I got a bit of goosebumps hearing that,’ Sarah gasped.

Her co-panellists agreed, with Waleed Aly saying: ‘It’s at once familiar and different… you can kind of hear what he’s been through but unmistakably, it’s [Farnham].’

‘Not just the voice, but the intonation.’

Sarah added: ‘He said it’s been a rollercoaster recording it because of all the highs and lows he’s had over the last few years. It’s good to see him.’

‘Apart from everything else though, I tell you what, he reads the book well. It’s not easy to do,’ Waleed said.

The voice of legendary Aussie singer Farnham was heard for the first time this week after he underwent surgery for mouth cancer.

The You’re The Voice hitmaker is narrating the audiobook version of his memoir The Voice Inside.

Publisher Hachette Australia released a snippet of the book on Tuesday, with Farnham sounding a little more gravelly than before his marathon 12-hour procedure.

‘I don’t enjoy talking about myself, I really don’t,’ he said in the teaser.

‘Don’t get me wrong, I’m an egomaniac, but dredging up the past is just not something I’ve ever really enjoyed.

‘I’ll try and share as much as I can, but that’s not easy because I’ve never really been that open. I guess there are reasons for that. Reasons for my reluctance.’

Since revealing his cancer diagnosis in August 2022, Farnham has mostly remained out of the public spotlight.

On the same day as his announcement, he underwent a gruelling 12-hour surgery, which included a jaw reconstruction to remove a tumour from his mouth.

In August 2023, Farnham revealed he was cancer-free, 12 months after the procedure.

Farnham’s family had previously given updates on behalf of the Australian music legend following the August 2022 operation.

Speaking on Sunrise, his son Robert said his father was ‘doing fantastic’.

The That’s Freedom favourite was additionally hospitalised after he developed a chest infection following surgery to remove a cancerous tumour in his mouth.

Farnham is ‘unlikely’ to ever perform again.

His operation, carried out by 26 medical staff, also saw a major part of his jaw removed.

Farnham had only discovered he had the cancerous growth in his mouth after his wife Jill insisted on taking him to the doctor for a check up when he developed a persistent mouth ulcer.
