Charli XCX feared Lorde would never speak to her again over hit song Girl, So Confusing

Charli XCX revealed she was worried Lorde would ‘never speak to me again’ after not telling the Ribs singer about her song Girl, So Confusing.

The singer, 32 — who is currently under fire for producing ‘terrible quality’ merch — explained to Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 that she didn’t tell her pal about the track, that is said to be about their relationship, until the day before its release.

‘I was ready for her to never speak to me again. That could have been an outcome,’ she shared on Tuesday.

In the track she sings: ‘Sometimes I think I might hate you / Maybe you just wanna be me and ‘People say we’re alike / They say we’ve got the same hair / We talk about making music / But I don’t know if it’s honest.’

The Boom Clap hitmaker confirmed the record touches on the ambivalent feelings she had toward the 27-year-old over their careers.

Earlier this year, she told Rolling Stone she was ‘jealous’ of the success Lorde — real name Ella Yelich-O’Connor — achieved with her mega hit Royals that launched her into stardom in 2013.

She told the outlet: ‘I was super jealous of the success that [Royals] got, and that Ella got.

‘You piece all this stuff together in your brain, like: “She was into my music. She had big hair; I had big hair. She wore black lipstick; I once wore black lipstick.” You create these parallels and think, “Well, that could have been me.”‘

On Tuesday, she said that a day prior to her album Brat’s release in America, which her song Girl, So Confusing is featured on, she called Lorde to explain it to her.

But, the New Zealand born singer had already heard the track because of the time difference.

Charli also revealed the Team singer already knew Girl, So Confusing was about her.

The English singer recalled the moment, saying, ‘She was like, “I can guess which one it is.” And so I was like, “F*ck” But she was so cool, and I was like … We sent these voice notes back and forth.’

Lorde then suggested she could remix the track.

Charli explained: ‘She was like, “Wouldn’t it be cool if I did this response?” And I was like, “Oh, my God. I can’t believe this is happening. Yes.” And it was so quick.

‘I mean, she said that on I think the Friday, and she sent me the thing, the verse by Monday.’

Lorde’s lyrics on her rendition say: ‘Well, honestly, I was speechless / When I woke up to your voice note / You told me how you’d been feeling / Let’s work it out on the remix.’

She also touched on her battle with body dysmorphia, vocalizing, ‘I was so lost in my head / And scared to be in your pictures / ‘Cause for the last couple years / I’ve been at war with my body / I tried to starve myself thinner / And then I gained all the weight back.’
