Heather Graham reveals why she shared family rift of 30 years

Heather Graham has explained why she publicly shared that she hasn’t spoken to her parents in 30 years.

The 52-year-old filmmaker had previously told the Wall Street Journal in August, ‘I stopped talking to my parents when I was 25, and I’m estranged from them now.’

In a new interview with People she explained, ‘I mean, it is a little vulnerable to talk about in an interview.

‘And at the same point, I know that there’s a lot of other people who are going through something like it, so I guess I just feel like being honest about my life and not pretending that everything is always fantastic.’

Revealing that she doesn’t regret the decision to share the family rift with the world, she added, ‘I’m okay just being who I am.’

And she noted she ‘didn’t get into all the details in the article’ about ‘why I don’t talk to them, ‘But I have very great, very wonderful friends. And so that is a really lucky thing to have in my life.’

Graham wrote, directed, and starred in the new film Chosen Family, which is in theaters and on demand beginning October 11.

Speaking on social media platform Letterboxd, she discussed feeling isolated in her professional and personal lives.

‘Maybe that’s a theme I relate to in my life as well as my work, is kind of feeling alienated, looking for your family,’ she explained in a teaser shared to Instagram this week.

The Hangover star added, ‘I definitely feel like there’s people I’ve met in my life that I’m not related to that feel like they’re my family.’

‘And I can relate to that search as well,’ she said.

In a caption to her more than half a million followers, she wrote, ‘Did this cool interview with @brianformo @letterboxd and got to talk about Chosen Family and my whole career.’

Leading up to its release, the Hollywood vet has been plugging in recent posts, ‘Chosen Family is in theaters and On Demand Oct 11th.’

Julia Stiles also appears in the movie, and the two chatted about the project with SAG-AFTRA Foundation in September.

In her August interview with WSJ, Heather revealed: ‘Home and school weren’t happy places growing up.’

Speaking about her dad, she said: ‘My father, James, was an F.B.I. agent. He regularly told me that the entertainment industry was evil and that Hollywood would claim my soul if I became an actress and appeared in anything with sexual content.’

The blonde beauty continued, ‘My mother, Joan, was an elementary school teacher. But my parents were part of a generation that didn’t believe in therapy or discussing personal things, so I never felt I could talk to them.’

Pointing to her mom, she remarked, ‘To her credit, my mother supported my creative streak and acting ambition. It was a mixed message, though, since my father was strongly against them and my mother didn’t do much to protect me from him.’
