Zak Crawley – 7.5

Produced some of the cleanest hitting of the Test on his comeback from a finger injury, but could do with converting some of his numerous 70-somethings.

Ben Duckett – 8

A dislocated thumb did not stop him batting beautifully, though he now has eight Test dismissals between 71 and 98, and only three hundreds.

Ollie Pope – 5

Fell for a second-ball duck in a total of 823 for seven after Duckett’s injury obliged him to open, but now has three wins in four Tests as captain – and this was the best yet.

Joe Root – 10

Rewrote the record books during his epic 262. Can he overhaul Sachin Tendulkar one day? It may all depend on his appetite, which shows no sign of waning.

Chris Woakes – 7

Showed heart and skill in his first overseas Test of the Bazball era. England’s most economical bowler in Pakistan’s first innings, he kickstarted their demise in the second by knocking over Abdullah Shafique first ball.

Jack Leach – 8

A superb comeback after nine months out of the side. No one on either side came close to his seven wickets, and he comfortably outperformed his Somerset team-mate Bashir.
