Australia’s best bodybuilder reveals the secrets behind carving a rig like Arnold Schwarzenegger

It takes more than just regular gym time to build a body identical to a young Arnold Schwarzenegger, but Australia’s best bodybuilder has revealed the secrets behind how he achieved exactly that.

Calum Von Moger, born in 1990 in Victoria, Australia, began his bodybuilding journey with a victory at the NABBA Junior International Championships in 2011.

He rose to fame by clinching the WFF Mr. Universe title three times, in 2011, 2014, and 2015.

In 2020, he secured his IFBB Pro card after triumphing at the NPC Universe in Classic Physique.

Additionally, Von Moger is recognised for his role as Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 2018 film ‘Bigger’

Von Moger’s casting was pivotal due to his striking resemblance and physique similar to a young Schwarzenegger.

To prepare for the role, Von Moger immersed himself in Schwarzenegger’s early career, honing his accent and studying his mannerisms to deliver an authentic performance.

‘That was a really cool experience actually,’ Von Moger said, appearing on Seven’s Weekend Sunrise on Saturday.

‘I looked up to Arnold my whole life in body building and all that.

‘I landed that gig, I had my manager reach out as a scout for Steve Jones, he was the producer.

‘Went to his place, did the audition. He was looking for a tall, dark haired, six two Arnold lookalike – I fit a few of the criteria.’

Hosts Matt Doran and Monique Wright couldn’t resist getting him to try on the accent one more time.

Matt Doran: ‘Give us a little bit’

Calum: ‘Get out of here [in Arnie voice]’

Monique Wright: ‘That’s very good, get back to the chopper’

Calum: ‘It’s not a tumour’

‘Everyone asks it, it’s kind of got a little bit, yeah,’ Calum laughed.

But how did the three-time Mr Universe manage to chisel his body into such peak condition he could emulate Schwarzenegger?

‘The gym is the first place, but I’ve been training for about, oh I would say 15 years,’ he said.

‘I started when I was 15 and was just dedicated to the gym and diet.

‘Just regular and rigourous exercise.

‘I got into it after following my older brother into the gym,’ Van Moger continued.

‘Then someone just said why don’t you give competition a go.

‘I did it, and I did really well. So I kind of just caught a bug and went with it.’

To reach Von Moger’s physique level requires extremely hard work and discipline, though, as he revealed on Weekend Sunrise.

‘A disciplined day would be like prepping for a show and it [involves] waking up very early, brisk walk, no food, I’ve got to fast on an empty stomach,’ he said.

‘First thing in the morning I get up on an empty stomach and then go for a walk up a hill.

‘Then I eat eight meals a day. Not huge meals. Not massive.

‘Egg whites, oats, then I do like chicken breast, beef or white rice or potato.

‘Just all the important stuff.’

But when he is not training for competition, all bets are off.

‘Burgers, pizza, sushi, ice cream, snacks,’ he laughed.

‘A lot of people do it in reverse. They start with that then they have to do the diet after.’
