Modern Family’s Julie Bowen reveals Happy Gilmore 2 won’t be making any ‘targeted and hurtful’ jokes – following first look of Adam Sandler sequel

Julie Bowen has given a sneak peek into what the humour on the long-awaited Happy Gilmore sequel will be like.

The America actress, 54, starred as the titular character’s (Adam Sandler) love interest in the original film which has since become a cult comedy classic.

But the Modern Family star revealed in this week’s Stellar issue that the team behind the sequel will take a different approach to comedy in the upcoming flick.

‘I do think that comedy [as a genre] has become less targeted and hurtful. I don’t put that on Adam,’ she told the publication.

‘I’m just saying that gender slurs or [jokes about] sexual orientations you simply wouldn’t make anymore.

‘You would cringe at things that were perfectly accepted 20 years ago. And thank God. I hope I’m not on screen doing any of those things, but I may be.’

Despite the different approach Hollywood star Adam, 58, appears to be taking to the sequel of his iconic hit movie, some things will remain the same.

Julie assured the lead character Happy Gilmore ‘hasn’t changed a lot’ and is ‘still not always happy, or else he would be boring’.

It comes after the first photos from the set of the much-anticipated sequel were finally released on Friday.

Adam, who is stepping back into his iconic role as Happy Gilmore, was spotted taking swings at a driving range while filming scenes in Closter, New Jersey.

Joined by his stunt double, Adam appeared to be enjoying the shoot, sharing laughs between takes.

The upcoming sequel, directed by Kyle Newacheck, marks a return to the 1996 comedy classic where a failed hockey player becomes a golf sensation.

While no release date has been announced, the star-studded cast includes Bad Bunny, Julie Bowen reprising her role as Virginia Venit, and Christopher McDonald returning as Shooter McGavin.

Taylor Swift’s boyfriend Travis Kelce is also expected to make a cameo in the film as recent reports have indicated the Kansas City Chiefs tight end, 34, has been in regular conversations with Adam, discussing his participation in Happy Gilmore 2.

Happy Gilmore, released in 1996, follows the story of a failed hockey player, Happy Gilmore (Adam Sandler), who unexpectedly discovers his talent for golf, leading him to compete in a professional tournament.

The film was a commercial success, grossing over $41 million at the box office against a budget of just $12 million.

While it received mixed reviews from critics, it has since become a cult classic, praised for its humour and memorable performances, solidifying Sandler’s status as a leading comedic actor in Hollywood.
