Sacha Baron Cohen reveals he may NEVER bring back Borat after being hunted by pro-gun mob

Sacha Baron Cohen has revealed he may never bring back alter ego Borat after being forced into hiding to escape a pro-gun mob.

The comedy star, 53, reprised his role of Borat Sagdiyev for the 2020 comedy satire Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.

However, he drew fury from pro-gun activists when he turned up at a rally and mocked them on camera.

Recalling the terrifying moment he had to hide from the group, Sacha told the SmartLess podcast: ‘The last one became so extreme. After that gun rally, I was essentially on the run.

‘I had a militia kind of following me. I was going from safe house to safe house for about four days. It became so crazy that you realise there’s a certain amount of skill and preparation, but also you’re going to be lucky. And at some point, your luck runs out.’

The actor survived the ordeal, but hinted he won’t revive Borat again, explaining he only created his 2020 film after feeling compelled to comment on the US presidential election that year.

He continued: ‘I think the danger element meant I just didn’t want to do it again. I felt I had to do it for that election. I had to do it. I was terrified about what’s going to happen.’ 

Borat, is a 2006 mockumentary black comedy film directed by Larry Charles and starring Sacha.

Sacha plays the leading role of Borat, a fictional Kazakhstani journalist who travels through the United States to make a documentary which features real-life interactions with Americans. 

Borat was released in November 2006, in both the United Kingdom and United States, by 20th Century Fox.  

The film received critical acclaim, and earned $262 million worldwide, with Sacha winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

Sacha and his ex-wife Isla Fisher, who share two daughters and one son, jointly filed to end their marriage in 2023.

In addition to Elula, the former share daughter, Olive, who was born in 2007, and their son, Montgomery, 10.

The couple first met back in 2001 and tied the knot in 2010.

The end of their marriage came after just a few years after relocating their family to Australia back in 2020.

They had moved from Los Angeles to Sydney in 2020, then to Perth – where Isla’s family live – in September 2021, to escape Sydney’s strict Covid lockdown rules.

At the time, they said the switch to Western Australia would be permanent.

However, their move from the US to Australia was said to be ‘difficult’ for Baron Cohen because he was settled in Hollywood, and it was a shorter flight to London from there, too.

The exes announced in April that they had quietly separated last year.
