Marty Sheargold reveals he is four months sober as he breaks his silence on AFL Grand Final controversy

Marty Sheargold has revealed he has been sober for four months as he broke his silence on his AFL Grand Final controversy.

The Triple M host, 53, has spoken out about an incident at the 2023 AFL Grand Final for the first time, saying it was a catalyst for him to get ‘back on the wagon’.

The radio star left the game at halftime after allegedly making a number of offensive comments to other guests while watching the game from a corporate box.

Despite reports that he was ejected from the MCC by security, which were also refuted by a Southern Cross Austereo spokesperson at the time, Marty has now insisted he left the ground ‘under his own steam’.

Speaking to the Herald Sun, Marty also told how he had been around four months sober at the time of the alleged incident but fell of the wagon at the grand final.

‘I am not about to start making excuses but I had been sober for about three or four months and my grand final day got very large on me very quickly,’ he said.

‘Every now and then in life you think you are bulletproof and then someone taps you on the shoulder and reminds that you are not.

‘Sometimes you have to know when your day is over – but I certainly made a t*t of myself, there’s no getting away from that.’

Following the incident, Marty took personal leave from his Triple M breakfast show and, after returning briefly in January, announced he was leaving the show for good in July, moving to the network’s national drive slot.

Marty said the AFL incident made him reassess his ‘love-hate’ relationship with alcohol, revealing that he has now been sober for four months, since June.

He said it has taken him 53 years to realise that alcohol isn’t a ‘friend’ of his as he detailed his sobriety journey.

In July, Marty told how he was leaving his Triple M show to spend more time with his family and prioritise ‘self-care’ following his three-month absence after the AFL incident.

‘Taking an extended break at the end of last year has reinforced the importance of spending more quality time with my family,’ he said in a statement at the time.

‘As a result, I have made the decision to prioritise self-care, maintaining a better work/life balance and will not be returning to my Triple M Breakfast show.

‘However, I will continue The Marty Sheargold Show podcast, along with the 3-4pm national Triple M show.’

He continued: ‘I want to thank my immediate team and the network for their ongoing support and understanding.

‘And I’d also like to thank the listeners for their loyalty to both the show and the station. Like them, I remain a Triple M fan.’

SCA Chief Content Officer, Dave Cameron, added: ‘SCA supports Marty’s decision to rebalance his personal and work commitments, and we’d like to thank Marty and his team for creating a unique and hilarious Breakfast show for Melbourne since 2021.’
