Celebrity chef Josh Niland raves about ‘best ever’ bread roll at a little Sydney restaurant: ‘A timeless masterpiece’

One of Australia’s top chefs has revealed his ‘favourite’ snack in all of Sydney – and the treat has been said to ‘exceed all expectations’.

Josh Niland is the owner and head chef behind popular restaurants Saint Peter and the Fish Butchery.

He shared his favourite snack, his go-to cafe for the best coffee in Sydney, and his favourite ‘hidden gem’ in the city.

‘The potato bread at Ester is a timeless masterpiece,’ Mr Niland told Broadsheet.

Mat Lindsay’s restaurant Ester has famously been dubbed one of the ‘best spots in Sydney’ by critics, with diners going back time and again for its woodfired dishes.

‘I came here because I stumbled upon a mention of potato bread. It is definitely the star of the show,’ a five-star reviewer said.

Another raved, ‘Every dish was a treat for the taste buds, but a few stood out to me in particular. The fermented potato bread with salmon roe and kefir cream was a unique and flavorful combination.’

‘The potato bread and condiments were next level amazing,’ a third echoed. ‘It exceeded all the hype.’

Mr Niland also said Room Ten in Potts Point serves the best coffee in Sydney.

The cafe uses Australian brand Mecca Coffee for its signature drinks.

Room Ten is also known for its sandwiches and avocado toast – with several claiming they visit the spot several times a week for brunch.

When it comes to his favourite hidden gem, Mr Niland recommended a little cafe in North Sydney.

‘I don’t know how hidden it is now, but the team at Fiore Bread make beautiful bread, pastries, and coffee.

‘And [they] have a beautifully sunny position in McMahons Point on the north shore – great for an early morning treat,’ he said.

Reviewers couldn’t agree more.

‘Exceptional artisan bakery on the lower North Shore,’ one said. ‘The emmer seeded loaf and fruit and nut loaf are great. The Armenian walnut cake is also delicious. You can grab a coffee and enjoy the village-like setting of Blues Point Road.’

‘Fiore has the most perfect bread loaf in all of Sydney,’ another said.
