Steven Gerrard says he hopes Mohamed Salah will stay at Liverpool beyond the current season.

The Egyptian has become one of Liverpool’s greatest ever players during his seven-year stay at the club.

However, his contract expires this summer, and he has long been linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League.

Al-Ettifaq boss Gerrard, despite his links to Saudi Arabia, wants Salah to remain at Anfield for ‘another couple of years’ as he heaped praise on the forward.

Speaking on The Redmen TV podcast, the former Liverpool midfielder said: ‘I hope we still get another couple of years out of Mo Salah. I think he can deliver for many more years because of his shape, his professionalism.

‘So I hope he stays. I hope we get more out of him, but I’m not surprised because the ones that are obsessed of the profession and they’ve got that level of talent, it’s no surprise that the consistent levels are there all the time.’

Gerrard also fuelled hope to Reds supporters that Salah will stay having spoken toto the club’s former goalkeeping coach John Achterberg, who left Liverpool in the summer after 15 years.

‘I always pick John’s brain and what would he like on a database. John says he’s really obsessed to be the best, and he wants to break records. He wants to be remembered as the best,’ Gerrard added.

‘So I’m not surprised in terms of how he approaches his profession. And I think he’s going to be one of these players that we’ll all appreciate even more when the day eventually comes when he moves on.’

Salah has already established himself as a Liverpool legend – alongside Gerrard – after scoring 218 goals in his first 360 appearances for the Merseyside club across all competitions.

Only Ian Rush (339) and Roger Hunt (263) have scored more goals for Liverpool than Salah in the club’s 132-year history.

Salah has scored 160 Premier League goals for the Reds, having netted another two while playing for Chelsea in the 2013-14 campaign.

The 32-year-old moved up to ninth on the all-time list of the Premier League’s leading scorers on Sunday when he netted the opening goal in Liverpool’s 2-1 win over his former club at Anfield last week.

He will seek to add to his tally when Arne Slot’s side visit Arsenal in a title shodown at the Emirates.
