Baseball’s impossible job? MLB’s worst team hire new manager after losing 121 games last season

After losing 121 games this past season, marking a new low for Modern Baseball history, on American League Central team has hired a new manager in the hopes they can improve from last season’s debacle.

According to multiple reports, the Chicago White Sox have hired Texas Rangers associate manager Will Venable as their new manager.

Venable is a former player – who made his MLB debut with the San Diego Padres back in 2008 after attending Princeton.

In addition to San Diego, Venable also played one season with the Rangers and a season with the Los Angeles Dodgers before announcing his retirement.

After his playing career had ended, Venable was named a special assistant to Chicago Cubs president Theo Epstein in 2017.

He then was a first base coach for the Cubs in 2018 and 2019 before moving across the diamond to third base in 2020.

After Chicago, Venable moved to the Boston Red Sox – where he served as bench coach under manager Alex Cora.

After three seasons with Boston, Venable moved to Texas – where he won a World Series title alongside manager Bruce Bochy in 2023.

Venable now joins the White Sox as the 44th manager in the 124 year history of the ballclub.

This year, the White Sox set the modern baseball record for the most losses in a single season with 121 – just besting the 1962 New York Mets for the dubious honor.
