Coldplay frontman Chris Martin reveals wild reason the band hasn’t played the east coast of Australia in eight years

Coldplay frontman Chris Martin has revealed the reason the UK hitmakers haven’t toured the east coast of Australia in almost a decade.

The band are currently in Australia on their Spheres World Tour which sees the band make four night stands at Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium and Sydney’s Olympic Park.

But it’s been a long time between Aussie east coast gigs for the Yellow hitmakers who last hit Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney for their 2016 A Head Full Of Dreams Tour.

The band returned Down Under last year but confined themselves to two shows on the west coast at Perth’s Optus Stadium.

And during the band’s first of four Melbourne shows on Wednesday, Chris, 47, revealed to the sold-out crowd just why the band had avoided one half of Australia.

‘We haven’t been to Melbourne and Sydney and Brisbane for quite some time,’ he said. ‘I’m going to tell it, f**k it.’

Chris went on to reveal that the reason the band had avoided Australia was due to a negative review of the band’s December 2016 performance at Brisbane’s Suncorp stadium.

‘I made the mistake eight years ago, I looked at the press and a gentleman wrote an article saying that he lived next to the stadium, and he said we ruined his night,’ he said.

‘So I was like: “Oh s**t”’.

It seems the review had stuck with Chris for some time, as he  revealed to Today’s Brooke Boney in 2021 how much the harsh words had affected him.

‘It’s taken me about five years to get over this one thing that happened the last time,’ Chris said.

Adding that he ‘seldom’ reads reviews, he made the mistake of checking one out that was written by a reviewer who didn’t even attend the gig.

‘The last time we were in Australia, the only thing I saw, the only thing, was a guy who wrote a review of our Brisbane show and said that he wasn’t even at the concert, he was in his garden,’ he said.

Chris added that he took the review to heart, especially as the harsh reviewer said the band had ‘ruined his night because he lived a block away’ from the venue.

‘I still feel terrible,’ Chris added.

The band’s first show of their Australian stadium tour was derailed on Wednesday night after one band member suffered a health emergency.

In a career first, lead singer Chris Martin announced the band would be playing their first show in Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium without bassist Guy Berryman after he was struck down by an illness.

During the concert, Chris, 47, said: ‘We will have a slightly different show and we’ll do our best to make it amazing because we are in Melbourne with all you beautiful people.’

‘If you see some mistakes and problems, it’s because we don’t have our bass player. You won’t see Guy tonight because he is vomiting,’ the singer added.

Taking to Instagram after the show on Wednesday night, the band thanked their fans for understanding.

‘Tonight was the first time in our band’s history that we’ve played a show without all four members onstage. Guy was taken ill unexpectedly just before the show. Thank you for carrying us through it.’
