Listen to the other triple-zero call made after Dan Andrews’ crash with a 15-year-old cyclist: ‘Someone’s been run over’

Emergency operator: Go ahead caller, what address do you need the ambulance?

Martha: Ridley Street, Blairgowie. I’m at number 10

Emergency operator: I’ll just confirm 10 Ridley Street Blairgowie, just near the Melbourne Road Trail and Hilltop Avenue. Is that right? I can see you are just off Melbourne Road there.

Martha: Yes, just off Melbourne Road

Emergency operator: And what’s the problem? Tell me exactly what’s happened

Martha: Someone’s been run over, someone on a bike

Emergency operator: Has been hit by a car, is that right?

Martha: I think so, yes

Emergency operator: Ok, then we’ll get some help there for you darl. Are you with a patient at the moment?

Martha: No, I’m just going there now.

Emergency operator: OK and how old is the patient roughly?

Martha: I don’t know

Emergency operator: You’re not sure? Do you know how many people are hurt?

Martha: Just one I think.

Emergency operator: OK then. And is it a male or a female?

Martha: I can’t tell

Emergency operator: You’re not sure? No worries. OK, so you’re not sure how many patients there are?

Martha: No.

Emergency operator: OK, then just bear with me there. I’m just organising some help now.

Martha: Thank you.

Emergency operator: And it’s a bike versus a car, is it? I’m just organising the ambulance there for you OK. So, that’s all organised. So you are you on scene at the moment?

Martha: I’m just walking, there

Emergency operator: No worries. How far away are you?

Martha: About 20 metres.

Emergency operator: OK, I’ll just stay on the line until you get there, OK? OK and can you just ask how many people are hurt?

Martha: Sorry.

Emergency operator: Can you ask how many people are hurt?

Martha: No, I am going to lose you because I am on a cordless phone

Emergency operator: Oh, OK. Are you able to find out what’s going on and then give us a call back? That’s fine darling, just give us a call back if I drop out.

TWO MINUTES LATER

Emergency operator: It’s calling back from the ambulance service darl. Did you find out what was going on there? Did you find out what was happening? Can you hear me?

Martha: Yes, it’s a boy.

Emergency operator: And how many people are hurt darl?

Martha: There’s one hurt, just one hurt.

Emergency operator: And how old is he roughly?

Martha: A teenager, it looks like what?

Emergency operator: About 15 or 16 around that age?

Martha: Yes

Emergency operator: And it’s a boy, is it?

Martha: Yes, I think so

Emergency operator: Is he conscious?

Martha: Just

Emergency operator: Is he breathing?

Martha: I think so. I’m just going to get a blanket.

Emergency operator: OK, no worries. Just bear with me, are there any chemicals or other hazards involved?

Martha: No

Emergency operator: And is anyone trapped in the vehicle?

Martha: No

Emergency operator: Was anyone thrown from the vehicle?

Martha: It looks like the car hit the boy on the bike

Emergency operator: Is he completely awake?

Martha: I think so. I’m just walking away to get a blanket.

Emergency operator: But you’re not sure if he’s completely awake?

Martha: I’m not sure

Emergency operator: No worries, darl. And and did he have any obvious injuries?

Martha: Yes, it looks like he’s got a grazed elbow but I can see blood through his T shirt

Emergency operator: OK on his chest?

Martha: On his chest, just under his arm.

Emergency operator: No worries and and is the bleeding serious?

Martha: It is just coming through the t-shirt

Emergency operator: Is it squinting or pouring out or you’re not sure?

Martha: I can’t tell

Emergency operator: OK, then.

Martha: I am just getting a blanket

Emergency operator: So, what I might do is if your phone drops out when you get close to him. Now, we don’t want to splint any injuries, and we don’t want to move him unless he is in danger

Martha: We are not moving him. There’s a woman talking to him and I am just getting a blanket

Emergency operator: Now nothing further to eat or drink for him, it might make him sick or cause problems. And as I said, we don’t want to move him unless it’s necessary. Just get him to be still and wait for the ambulance to get there.

Martha: I think somebody has already rang the ambulance there too

Emergency operator: OK then, no worries at all.  I’ll just confirm it’s 10 Ridley Street in Blairgowrie that we’re coming to and it’s just near you there.

It’s just near me there

Emergency operator: OK, No worries. Now, if there’s someone on scene there with the patient who’s on the phone to the ambulance. Is that right?

Martha: Yes

Emergency operator: No worries if he does get worse in any way, I want you to call us straight back on triple zero.

Martha: I will

Emergency operator: All the best there.
