- Says troubled five eighth is an awesome person
- Ezra Mam is facing uncertain playing future
NRL star Reece Walsh wants the Brisbane Broncos to give Ezra Mam a second chance and not tear up the the troubled player’s $4 million contract following an off-field incident.
Mam is currently awaiting the results of a secondary drug test after he allegedly failed a roadside drug test following a head-on car crash.
Police will allege the 21-year-old was also driving the vehicle without a licence.
Queensland Police and the NRL ‘s Integrity Unit are investigating the incident, with the star five-eighth’s contract with the Broncos in jeopardy.
Mam has recently entered a rehabilitation facility – and Walsh believes his friend deserves a lifeline.
‘I feel for Ezra, he is an awesome person for a start,’ Walsh told the Courier Mail.
‘He is going through a tough time at the moment and everyone in this club feels for him.
‘They know the bloke Ezra is and how caring he is. We have his back and it’s important we are there for him and we support him.

‘Ezra is an awesome person and anyone that’s had a genuine conversation with him or has met him will understand that.
‘In this case, he has made a poor decision, but that doesn’t define who he is as a person or define the future. I know he will learn from it.
‘He will take the actions he needs to do to come back in the right way.’
Mam’s management released a statement last week saying the star is seeking ‘immediate professional treatment’ in a rehabilitation facility.
If Mam isn’t moved on from Red Hill, the Broncos face the prospect of the NRL suspending him for the start of the 2025 season.

Coach Michael Maguire is adamant accountability is key for Mam.
‘People will make mistakes but they have also got to own them. That’s the big thing, if he owns where he is at,’ he said.
‘His actions moving forward are very important. I know he is getting some help at the moment about where he is at. ‘When he works through that, I will get some time with him.
‘He’s got to go through a process with police, the game and the (Broncos) itself….wherever that lands, we’ll move forward with what we have.’
