Shawn Mendes reveals why he opened up about past pregnancy scare after  sexuality revelation

Shawn Mendes has opened up about a very personal experience on his new album.

The Heart of Gold artist, 26, who recently disclosed he was still ‘figuring out’ his sexuality, has also revealed there was a moment when he thought he might be a dad.

In the track, Why Why Why from the new album, Shawn, sings about the pregnancy scare he shared with an unnamed partner.

‘Thought I was about to be a father / Shook me to the core, I’m still a kid / Sometimes I still cry out for my mother,’ go the lyrics.

Going through that experience ‘taught me a lot as a man,’ the It’ll Be Okay artist told The New York Times.

The hitmaker was initially against writing about that fraught period in his life, when one of his collaborators suggested it might be good for a song, but later changed his mind.

‘I was like, “why am I doing this if not to write about those kinds of complexities?”‘ he told the publication.

‘And also, I wanted to break down any walls that were remaining, between me and people listening.’

The song also deals with Mendes’ mental health struggles.

He bravely cancelled his 2022 tour, citing the need to take time ‘to ground myself and come back stronger.’ He has since experienced somewhat of a comeback, performing recently at the MTV Video Music Awards.

In an interview in August on Zane Lowe’s Apple Music 1 show he said, ‘I realized there [were] two options for me. It was literally like, “I’m going to go down this path of speaking my exact truth or I’m going to dance around it,”‘ he explained.

‘It felt pointless to dance around it, even if the song was never to see the light of day.’

The Canadian heartthrob, who dated fellow singer Camila Cabello, 27, for several years told The New York Times that while not romantically involved, they still love each other.

Mendes said he calls the Havana artist often.

‘I have nerves just even speaking about it, just what people would say. But honestly, if something was to happen in my family and if something was to happen to me, she’d probably be the first person I call, to this day,’ he declared.

‘Our relationship is teaching me what love means, in a big way.’

Shawn is set to release November 15.
