- Boxing star Harry Garside debuts new girlfriend, Sonny
- Couple met at a New Year’s Eve party and started dating
- Garside says he is very happy in the new relationship
Australian boxer Harry Garside has debuted his new romance at the Melbourne Cup, revealing that the happy couple met at a New Year’s Eve party and have been dating since.
The 27-year-old champion pugilist made an inspirational comeback to the ring at the Olympics after he was cleared of domestic violence allegations made by former partner, Ash Ruscoe.
However, he failed to progress beyond the first round in Paris, later telling Nine he ‘felt like a failure’ having trained for 20 years only to fall at the first hurdle.
In August, Garside revealed he had met somebody new and fallen in love, but her identity wasn’t revealed until today.
Garside and his new partner, Sonny, spoke to Daily Mail Australia exclusively from Flemington before the race that stops a nation.
Sydneysider Sonny, 21, works in PR and said she met the boxer at a New Year’s Eve party.
‘And I took her out on a date two weeks later,’ Garside added.
The Aussie boxer explained that he was very happy with the new relationship and is still interested in pursuing boxing.

‘I think I’ll definitely still box – I’ve still got the fire in my belly, but nothing locked in until next year,’ he said.
The boxer was dramatically arrested at Sydney Airport last year as he returned home after appearing on I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! in South Africa.
He was accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend Ash Ruscoe, which he firmly denied, and police later dropped the charges after his legal team produced video evidence they said showed his ex was the alleged aggressor.
Garside later said the court case ordeal was the ‘best thing that ever happened’ to him.

‘The way it happened and what I was getting accused of was just so heavy. I look back now and realise it was the best thing that ever happened to me,’ he told The Jess Rowe Big Talk Show in September.
‘It was just like the time in my life where I actually had to step up for myself and become my own friend and have my own back.’
He added that at a particularly low point during the ordeal, he began collecting ‘evidence’ about why he was a good person, which significantly boosted his morale.
‘That was like a bit of a turning point where it’s like, I need to change this story, this belief. I need to stop collecting the evidence I’m a terrible person,’ he went on.
‘I started collecting evidence that I am a good person and I am. I try my best, if a mate called me right now, I would try my best to help him as much as I could.’
Garside said he never would have been prompted to do so if he didn’t go through the challenging ordeal, which he said helped him become a better person.
