Andre Onana is convinced that Manchester United’s players can adapt to a different style under new head coach Ruben Amorim.
The Cameroon goalkeeper is one of five signings brought in by Erik ten Hag who played under the Dutchman at Ajax along with Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt, Noussair Mazraoui and Antony.
Amorim is set to change Ten Hag’s 4-2-3-1 system to the 3-4-3 he plays at Sporting Lisbon and used to beat Manchester City 4-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
‘I did watch it,’ said Onana. ‘It was a great victory for them. Different system, but my teammates we are all pragmatic.
‘Everyone here is capable of playing in each system, I don’t think it will be an issue for us. We have big players, and they will step up.’
Andre Onana is convinced Man United will ‘step up’ when Ruben Amorim arrives at the club
Amorim has thrived at Sporting Lisbon with a 3-4-3 formation, and Onana believes United will adapt to his system when the Portuguese boss takes over at Old Trafford next week
United are looking to secure their first win in Europe for the first time in more than a year on Thursday night
Ruud van Nistelrooy is the interim boss until Amorim arrives on Monday, and he takes charge of his third game against PAOK Salonika in the Europa League at Old Trafford on Thursday.
Van Nistelrooy admits that he still hasn’t spoken to Amorim and is in the dark over his future.
‘No, I didn’t have contact so far. There are no changes in that, I don’t know when yet,’ he said. ‘It’s difficult to comment on that now, I’m waiting for conversations to take place.
‘In the meantime, the most important for this club is getting the work done on a daily basis and in the game coming up. It’s a European night at Old Trafford against the Greek champions.
‘I feel the responsibility to do well over the next week and that’s my job. I think I’m doing the new manager the best favour to do that.’
United’s £59million summer signing Leny Yoro joined in first-team training on Wednesday for the first time in three months since fracturing a metatarsal. The French defender will return to action sometime after the international break.
MAN UTD (4-2-3-1): Onana; Mazraoui, De Ligt, Martinez, Dalot; Casemiro, Ugarte; Rashford, Fernandes, Garnacho; Hojlund.
