Australia’s answer to the Dutton Ranch from Stan hit Yellowstone is five times the size of the fictional property and the biggest working cattle station in the world

It’s the hit Stan neo-western series with a storyline as expansive as its setting.

And with the highly anticipated Season 5B of Yellowstone hitting the streamer this week, viewers have been once again cast back into the pastoral splendour of the show’s Dutton Ranch.

While the series centers around John Dutton (Kevin Costner) and his children Beth (Kelly Reilly), Kayce (Luke Grimes), and adopted son Jamie (Wes Bentley), the ranch, located in Montana, could also be considered a central character.

Much of the show’s drama is driven by John Dutton’s battles to ward off threats from a range of parties looking to steal the ground from under the family.

So just how does the Dutton Ranch stack up against some of Australia’s biggest cattle farms?

In the show’s premiere episode, John Dutton is having a conversation with chief of the Broken Rock Reservation, Thomas Rainwater.

Thomas reveals in the conversation that the Dutton Ranch is the size of US state Rhode Island, meaning that the ranch is approximately  776,900 acres.

While this may seem impressive to many, Australian’s could be forgiven for being less than impressed.

That’s because Australia is home to the largest working cattle station on earth – Anna Creek Station.

Sitting on a massive 5,851,000 acres, the South Australian property puts John Dutton’s Montana pad to shame.

The property was established in 1863 and was originally used for sheep grazing, eventually switching to cattle due to losses from dingo attacks.

The gargantuan cattle station was gazetted as a locality by the South Australian government in 2013.

Anna Creek boasts a main homestead as well as an outstation at the smaller Peake Station.

The Peake Ruins, including those of a former telegraph office, cemetery, mine site and lime kilns at the outstation, are listed on the South Australian Heritage Register.

While much of the work at Anna Creek was once done by stockman who mustered the cattle on horse, much like the crew at Dutton ranch, these days the workforce at Anna Creek is much smaller.

That’s because light aircraft are used to spot animals which are then rounded up by stockmen on motorbikes.

The property even stands head and shoulders above the next largest in Australia, Clifton Hills, which is also in South Australia and sits on 4,200,000 acres.

In fact size wise, John Dutton’s ranch does not even make the top ten when compared to Aussie cattle stations.

South Australia’s Quinyambie sits at number 10 on the largest stations in Australia list at a formidable 3,000,000 acres.

They say everything is bigger in Texas, but that’s not the case when it comes to cattle properties.

The largest cattle ranch in the US, King Ranch, is located in the Lone Star State and clocks in at a measly 825,000 acres.

In real life, the Dutton Ranch is the Chief Joseph Ranch, located in Darby, Montana.

The actual ranch is smaller than its fictional counterpart, clocking in at 2,500 acres.
