Tragedy as teenage footy player Brook Wilson dies from mystery health problem while warming up for a game

A New Zealand rugby club is in a state of shock after young player Brook Wilson suffered a medical event and died while warming up for a game of touch footy.

The popular 18-year-old died suddenly on November 5 as he prepared to take the field at the Woodend Rugby Club in North Canterbury.

The tragedy has stunned the local community, who are offering support to the Wilson family.

A local quiz team that Brook was a part of has organised an event in his honour and Dylan Schaare, a friend of Brook’s, said the quiz will be dedicated to his and his heartbroken family.

Woodend Rugby Club president Mark Paterson has posted a message to social media about the sorrow club members are feeling. 

‘Our heartfelt condolences go out to Brook’s family and friends during this difficult time,’ Paterson said.

‘We extend our sincere gratitude to everyone who provided assistance and support during this moment.’

Brook’s dad, Tony, said the family has been overwhelmed by the support they have received. 

‘We’re just stunned by the community spirit and the people that are willing to help,’ he told Stuff. 

‘I can’t believe how popular he was.’

Scott Liddell, acting school principal of Kaiapoi High School, also paid tribute to Brook.

‘Our staff and students fondly remember Brook as someone who lived life to the fullest and a boy who had a great group of very loyal mates who are coming together in these tough times,’ Liddell said.

‘We pass on our sympathy to Brook’s whānau [family] in these times that took him away from the bright future he had in front of him.’

The teenager’s funeral will be held in Rangiora on Thursday.
