‘Married Altrincham senior partner raped one of his staff’

A senior partner at an accountancy firm raped a woman after she got drunk and agreed to go back to his hotel room for Prosecco, a court heard.

Roger Bentley allegedly forced himself on the woman as she lay undressed and passed out in his bed.

The married 51-year-old later sent her a text which read: ‘Last night was such a great night – when can we do it again?’

The woman said she ‘froze’ during the encounter and pretended to be asleep and kept her eyes closed as Bentley had sex with her.

Manchester Crown Court heard the incident occurred in April 2015 and the complainant reported Bentley to the police in the same month.

The pair had a one-night stand earlier in the year, the court heard.

Amanda Thompson, prosecuting, said: ‘She had a lot to drink which impaired her memory but she did know she’d agreed to have sex with the defendant and that was what happened.

‘It was a one-off on her part and it was a decision she regretted.’

Discussing the night of the alleged assault, Miss Thompson added: ‘They ended up back at his room and he went downstairs to the bar and bought a bottle of Prosecco. She undressed herself and got into the bed, by now she was very drunk.

‘She drunk half a glass and then passed out and fell asleep. The next thing, it was the morning and she realised the defendant was performing oral sex on her.

‘She froze and didn’t know what to do. After a few months he stopped and moved on to penetration.

‘She was pretending to be asleep and kept her eyes closed. All of this time she was maintains the fact that she was asleep.’

That evening the woman attended a rape crisis centre and was examined by a doctor and returned to work.

Bentley attended a police station in October but denied he had raped or sexually assaulted the woman, adding that he believed the sex to be consensual.

Miss Thompson said: ‘He said that once they got back to the hotel she asked him to get Prosecco and it took him over 15 minutes and when he returned she was lying on the bed in her underwear. He said it was her that initiated the sex.’

Bentley, now 51, from Altrincham, denies rape and sexual assault. The hearing continues.
