Apple released its list of this year’s top podcasts, which had some surprising results.
The Joe Rogan Experience – widely regarded as the most popular podcast in the world – came in a distant third behind a much less prominent true crime pod.
Occupying the number one spot on Apple’s list was New York Times ‘The Daily,’ hosted by Times reporters Michael Barbaro and Sabrina Tavernise.
The Daily, which averages three million daily listeners, covers a wide variety of topics but usually centers on the biggest news story that broke the day before.
Although Joe Rogan wasn’t able to snag the gold on Apple’s platform, his interview with now President-elect Donald Trump was the second-most listened to episode. It was also the fifth most shared.
On YouTube, the episode has over 50 million views.
Apple runs one of the largest podcast platforms in the world, and 2024 marks the first year Rogan’s show was returned to Apple Podcasts after his exclusive deal with Spotify expired.

Recent episode of The Daily dissected former Congressman Matt Gaetz withdrawing his name from consideration to be the next Attorney General and the sentencing of Jose Ibarra, the illegal immigrant who murdered Laken Riley.
Each podcast is between 20 and 30 minutes long and airs five days a week.
More shocking perhaps is the fact that Rogan’s podcast was also behind true-crime podcast ‘Crime Junkie,’ which is hosted by Ashley Flowers and Brit Prawat.
‘Crime Junkie’ is a weekly podcast that covers popular true crime cases in a laid-back, conversational style.
Flowers and Prawat delve into solved and unsolved murders, missing people, mysterious deaths and more.
The duo’s latest episode was a breakdown of the murder of JonBenét Ramsey, a six-year-old child pageant star.
Her 1996 murder inside her family home remains one of the most infamous unsolved murders in American history.

‘Crime Junkie,’ with over 1.5 billion downloads, was the eighth most popular podcast on Spotify this year. Rogan’s podcast was the number one show on Spotify, beating out 11th place ‘The Daily’ as well.
The Tucker Carlson Show, which was the fourth most popular podcast on Spotify, was the number one news show on Apple Podcasts.
Serial, now on its 13th season, was the top series on Apple.
The first season of the show came out in October 2014 and untangled the case of Adnan Syed, who was convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee in 1999.
It’s largely credited with raising awareness about the case and leading to the release of Syed in 2022.
