Heavy rain and strong winds to lash the east coast

Australia’s east coast has been told to brace for more bad weather, with high tides, hazardous surf and storm warnings on the way.

Polluted water continues to be a problem in Melbourne after the city was hit with rain storms and flooding over the weekend.

Flood warnings have been released for the New South Wales south coast, and for the east coast of Tasmania.

High tides saw flooding at the Sydney Botanical Gardens on Tuesday, and at Bayview on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, after a rainy Monday in the city.

Generally cool conditions will be seen across much of southern Australia, and waterways in Port Phillip Bay remain polluted from heavy rain.

Water quality was rated as poor at 36 beaches in the area, and on four Yarra River locations by EPA Victoria, which warned people to avoid contact.

In Victoria there are flood warnings for the Kiewa River, the Seven and Castle Creeks, the Bunyip River, Dandenong Creek, the Mitchell River and the Yarra River

Similar warnings have been released for rivers in Tasmania, including the Derwent, the River Ouse and the River Clyde, along with flood warnings for the eastern half of the state.

In New South Wales heavy rain is forecast for the mid- north coast, especially around Kempsey, Nambucca Heads and Macksville.

The broad area of low pressure lying just off the New South Wales coast is expected to bring periods of heavy rain and abnormally high tides.

A Severe Weather Warning for heavy rainfall is in place for parts of the south coast and waterways in the St Georges Basin.

The effects of high tides could be seen in Sydney on Tuesday, with water flowing in the Botanical Gardens from the harbour, and a jetty submerged at Bayview.
