Why Jaguars star has no regrets over punching Texans player after Azeez Al-Shaair’s brutal Trevor Lawrence hit

Jaguars rookie Jarrian Jones would not hesitate to punch another rival after he was ejected in the chaos that followed Azeez Al-Shaair’s brutal hit on Trevor Lawrence.

Jacksonville quarterback Lawrence looks set to miss the rest of the NFL season after suffering a concussion in a controversial collision with Texans star Al-Shaair.

The linebacker flew elbow-first into Lawrence as the quarterback slid to the turf during the Texans’ 23-20 win on Sunday.

Al-Shaair was ejected from the game, which left Jaguars players and coaches seething and sparked a bench-clearing brawl. He had to be held back by his Texans teammates, while Lawrence laid motionless on the turf.

Amid the chaos, Jones was also ejected for punching a Texans player. ‘I threw a little something in there,’ the cornerback later admitted.

After the game, the rookie was condemned by his head coach Doug Pederson, who said: ‘He can’t do what he did either, that’s unacceptable.’

Jones is expecting to be fined for the punch and he admitted he ‘regrets’ getting ejected from the game.

But he insisted: ‘That’s my brother. I’d do the same thing for all 70 guys or however many make up the Jags organization… I just can’t get ejected in that moment.’

Jones added: ‘My brothers had my back, they told me they respected everything – how it went and what I did – but in the grand scheme of things, you can’t get ejected from games. That is just something you can’t do and I’m probably going to have a hefty fine coming for it.’

The cornerback was then asked about Texans coach DeMeco Ryans, who accused the Jaguars players of overreacting to Al-Shaair’s hit.

‘I don’t even want to talk about that guy, ‘ he said, before refusing to discuss the three-game suspension handed down to Al-Shaair, whose appeal over the punishment failed.
