- He became the quickest 16-year-old in the world over the distance
- But his father has revealed the Gout Gout is not the sprinter’s real name
The father of Australia’s most exciting sprinting prospect has revealed that his son is not in fact named Gout Gout, claiming that there had been a mix-up over his identity.
It came as the 16-year-old, who hails from Queensland, smashed Peter Norman’s 56-year Australian All Schools Athletics Championships record in the 200m final on Saturday.
The young Aussie star powered his way to the finish line to clock a record time of 20.04 seconds and break the record that has stood for over half a century. For perspective, Usain Bolt holds the world 200m record with a time of 19.19 seconds.
But speaking to Channel 7, the sprinter’s parents explained that his name is not in fact Gout Gout, but is actually Guot.
His father, Bona, clarified that the sprinter’s name is pronounced ‘gwot’.
He claims a spelling mix-up by the Sudanese government was the cause of the mistake after his family fled the country to Egypt.
Australian sprinting sensation Gout Gout’s father has revealed his son’s real name
Bona, the sprinter’s dad, claimed that his son’s name was not actually ‘Gout’ stating that his name is in fact ‘Guot’ and is pronounced ‘gwot’
It came after he smashed 56-year Australian record to become the fastest 16-year-old the world over 200m
They had intended on moving to Canada initially but documents from the Australian government arrived first, so opted for a move down under instead.
‘His name is Guot, it’s supposed to be Guot,’ Bona said to Channel 7.
‘When I see people calling him Gout Gout, I’m not really happy for him.’
Bona also made reference to the illness gout, the inflammatory arthritis disease that can cause pain and swelling in one’s foot.
‘I know that gout is a disease name but I don’t want my son to be called a disease name… It’s something that’s not acceptable,’ he said.
‘It’s culturally very important and in particular if (family) see Guot Guot running they connect to the name but when they hear Gout Gout they’ve lost the meaning of it.’
As his profile increases, the sprinter has found many making comparisons of himself to Jamaican sprinting great Bolt.
His dad added that he will look to change his son’s name back to its correct spelling soon.
After the race, the sprinter was seen celebrating with his manager James Templeton (left) and coach Di Sheppard (right)
‘For me, I don’t mind whatever you want to call him,’ Bona said.
‘Let them call him (that) but for myself, I know his name is Guot, that’s what I know. His mum is calling him Guot and the same here I call him Guot.’
The Ipswich product has set the athletics world alight with his lightning speed, paced the fastest 200m ever run by a 16-year-old.
His 200m time makes him the sixth-fastest athlete in the world in the 200m under the age of 20.
He lapped up the win alongside his coach Di Sheppard, who discovered the young talent when he was a year seven student.
‘I’ve been chasing that record… I didn’t think it would come this year!’ the sprinting ace said after the race.
‘As soon as the gun went, I was flying.
‘It’s pretty crazy. Right now, I can’t really process it.
His time of 20.04 also surpasses Usain Bolt’s 20.13 when he ran in an U18s race in Barbados in 2003.
